Today I am going share my homemade recipe of white sauce with you all. White sauce also popularly known as Béchamel sauce is an Italian traditional sauce & plays an important part in many Italian cuisines. It is also a base sauce of many other sauces, made from roux (butter & flour) & milk as main ingredients.
This sauce goes well with pasta, lasagna, macaroni, baked vegetable, Alfredo pizza & many more dishes which require a smooth & rich creamy texture. Its consistency can be altered by adjusting roux to milk proportion depending on the use.
Serving : 2-3
Preparation time : 5-10 min
Cooking time : 15-20 min
- Butter : 1 teaspoon
- Plain flour : 2 teaspoon
- Milk : 1 cup
- Garlic paste : 1/2 teaspoon (Optional)
- Finely chopped onion : 3 teaspoon (Optional)
- Oregano : 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper : 1/2 teaspoon
- Chilly flakes : 1/2 teaspoon (Optional)
- Salt : As per taste
Step 1: In a saucepan heat the butter, add garlic paste & finely chopped onion. Cook it for 1 min. You can skip adding garlic & onion in this step as it is purely optional. I love some garlic flavor in my pasta & lasagnas so I like adding it in white sauce itself. For baked vegetable or Alfredo pizza you can skip.
Step 2: Add plain flour & saute it for 2-3 min on medium flame.
Step 3: Gradually whisk in heated milk. There should not be any lump formation in the sauce. Stir continuously & bring it to boil. If some lumps are formed one can use this masher to remove all the lumps till the mixture is smooth.
Step 4: Add oregano, black pepper, chilly flakes & salt. Cook for another 5 minutes. Check the sauce consistency with your spoon. If it forms a light layer on your spoon your sauce is ready.
Step 5: Use this sauce with any of your dishes & enjoy the rich creamy taste of your homemade white sauce.
